14 day trial - what to download

14 day trial - what to download

Hi guys, looking for some advice here on how to get this trial going...

What files do I need to download to play?

I downloaded the trial from this location:
http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/downloads/....php?id=mmo

Once completed I launched, and the patcher started up with around about 96MB worth of update to do. (It states at the bottom left of the patcher '1.62' but I'm unsure if that refers to the patcher version or the game version.)

However, the patcher is hella slow on several fronts. It tends to freeze a lot (I can do whatever else I want on the PC at this time, it's just the patcher), but when it does work the fastest download I can get is about 2Kb/s. Not sure if that's just me or the patch server, but I had a similar problem trying to patch Shadowbane, and eventually gave up after 3 days had only gotten me to 50%.

Anyway, that's beside the point. You are welcome to make suggestions regarding the patcher etc.., but I imagine it's my own fault somewhere by having too many extra programs messing things up or another equally noob faliure.

What I'd really like to know is if I can d/l the necessary patches directly.
I found this page,

http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/patches/

Which looked promising. On reading it I thought it was saying the original file I downloaded should be enough. But because I was having issues I downloaded the next thing on the list at a juicy 1.25GB which was called isles_catacombs_engine_update.exe in about 3 hours at 120Kb/s. I plonked this into my DAOC 'Isles' folder as instructed, but it hasn't made any difference to the patcher.

So if anyone can guide me on which patches I might need to play the basic game, where I could get them, and in what order they need to be applied, ..I'd be so grateful.

Just in case anyone asks, I've included my stats below:
1.9GHz
1Gb RAM
3.5MB/s ADSL
Raedon 9800SE

Also FYI, troubleshooting steps regarding patcher:
* Closed all other software except patcher
* Disabled/closed Virus Protection (Avast)
* Disabled/closed Firewall (Sygate)
* Disabled proxy (Proximitron)
(Default browser is Firefox if that counts for anything)

If anyone has any guidance I'd be truely grateful. DAOC sounds pretty cool by all accounts so i'd love to experience it first hand.

Many thanks

unfortunately, the downloaded free trial is quite out of date. The patcher process is automatic and needed to bring your files up to date. You just have to wait through it even though it can be slow and freeze up often.

Once done, you won't have to patch often (DAoC usually has a new patch every two months or so).

New to DAOC need some advice

Hello, I currently downloaded the DAOC 14day trial and I was wondering what class

would be the most full filling to level in my short trial period. I am leaning

towards the Midgard Hunter seems like it would be a fun class I am a big fan of

stealthers but I will be broke so I dont want to lvl a too high maintence class

coming from a Ranger in FFXI. Any advice at all would be great thanks.

New player fleeing from WOW, please help/advise

Hello friends!

I'm fleeing from WOW. I'm experienced with MMORPGs... having played UO, AC, Tibia, WOW, Eve Online, Diablo 2/X.

I'm running from WOW. It has been my bane over the last 2 years. I've quit 2 times before this time (making a total of 3 times). I simply hate the game. I don't like the magic system, I don't like the crafting system. I played the game for its Battlegrounds, and now even that is screwed up IMO (especially for the "casual" player... I'm not REALLY casual, I'm just an ex-hardcore gamer with a job so I can't spend all day gaming like I used to).

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice.

I like playing magic classes. I had a tank mage and later a bard mage in UO. I had a mage in AC and a Sorcerer in Tibia. I loved playing my Necro and Sorcerer in Diablo. Eve Online has no equivalent... I just loved that game - but quit it because it didn't have the breadth of content I was seeking.

But I'm looking for a caster class that isn't a total weakling though. I preferred ice builds on my mage - still competative damage yet higher survivability. Lets not compare too much to WOW though - I hate that game. I guess Sorcerer in AD&D ruleset really jives well with me. (Think Sorcerer or Mage in a PC title like Baldur's Gate II: SOA.) I also enjoyed the Druid a great deal in wow, but quit my druid because I was not truly able to play the hybrid that I wanted to play - I always ended up being a healer, throwing away my casting and tanking abilities.

So hey - any advice? I'm downloading the 14 day free trial now. I'm looking for a new game to get into while I wait for Mythic's next great enterprise. I thought DAOC was dead - which is why I didn't try it out earlier. I find that it is definitely not dead.

Also can someone give me advice on the races as well as the classes? I'm sort of lost, reading some stat sheets, but this is far different from what I'm used to in other MMORPGS... Dex being a secondary stat for sorcerers for instance... ?!?!

Thanks a lot, everyone! I hope to enjoy DAOC!
